Tips

Save Water - Plant Rocks!
Because we live in the Sonoran Desert, we must use water wisely. Using boulders and crushed granite will help you lower your total cost of ownership and minimize the maintenance required to maintain your yard. Although plants are considered the highlight of many landscapes, it is important to remember that other landscape materials are available that add to the beauty and function of your yard. For example, you may want to incorporate boulders, sand stone benches and/or flag stone steppers to make a natural walk-way or trail, you can choose from a wide variety of size, shapes and colors of boulders at All Rock Supply.
Are you in a quandary about how much crushed or decomposed granite to purchase?
As a general rule, your layer of top dressing should be 2ยท3" thick. This will help to reduce water evaporation and weed growth and provide consistent coverage with less chance of developing bare spots in the future.
Measure the total area of your yard to be covered with granite.
Typically one ton of granite covers about 120 square feet but this is not always the case, call us to get a tonnage quote.
It is NOT advisable to put a layer of black plastic beneath your granite.
Over time, the edges will dry out and curl up and may become unsightly. In addition, black plastic prevents air and water from reaching nearby plant roots.
Tips for choosing the best crushed granite for you!
Come down to our rock yard and collect samples of crushed granite in our customer-friendly retail bins. Pick your favorite size and colors and we supply the plastic bags so you can take the free sample home with you for comparison purposes later.
Before making your final selection, study the samples you took home and apply them in a real landscape situation.
What is your overall effect that you are trying to achieve? Do you want the granite to match the color of your house or would you like it to provide a bit of contrast? Do you like a very natural look or a more stylized look? Do you want your yard to blend with a common neighborhood landscape theme or something different from the norm?
Top dressing with crushed granite is a lot like painting your house. The colors and textures may look different when they cover a large surface area; as well as in varying light conditions.
Consider your maintenance style. Some type of crushed granite are easier to rake than others. Some kinds minimize the appearance of plant litter.
